Obesity Surgery Bariatric surgery is a specialized branch of surgery that deals with the treatment of individuals with weight problems, particularly individuals whose weight and general health conditions are considered morbidly obese. Procedures under bariatric surgery generally fall under two (2) broad categories: gastric restrictive surgery or restrictive surgery and combined restrictive surgery and malabsorption surgery. Bariatric surgery is considered a major abdominal surgery. However, new methods such as laparoscopic surgery have been developed that require less operating time and hospitalization time. The eligibility requirements for going through any bariatric procedure are largely determined by the patient's unique health condition and particular weight problem. Aside from making a lifestyle change, patients who want to undergo bariatric surgery must also be prepared to cooperate with Post-Operative programs to help them maximize the benefits gained from the surgery. A bariatric procedure is more effectively maximized if the patient also makes the necessary lifestyle changes along with the support of family and friends and receives professional care from his/her doctor, surgeon and professional staff involved in the bariatric program. |
