Psychological Support

Home » Obesity Surgery » Patient Support » Psychological Support

Bariatric surgery requires patients to engage in a lifelong commitment to changes in their lifestyle such as eating habits and other behaviors. These changes may create emotional feelings of loss, isolation and concern about weight gain that the patient needs to cope with. Some patients may have unrealistic expectations about weight loss.

This is why a psychological evaluation is conducted before the surgery to ensure that patients are able to cope with stressful situations such as major weight loss. The bariatric program also has a provision for psychological support after the surgery.

Bariatric patients undergo group and personal counseling before and after surgery to help them develop better coping mechanisms in dealing with the lifestyle changes they need to follow. A support group composed of fellow bariatric patients and bariatric experts is also provided so that patients have a strong community to turn to for their emotional and communication needs.
